The traditional hierarchical model of healthcare is changing. The traditional consultation format of: tell me what’s wrong, here’s the panacea, let’s follow-up in a few weeks…is on its way out.
Why? Because there is so much information already available online. Institutional “guidelines” are losing their appeal.
Alternative health is growing exponentially. Health insurance companies profit off of patients and doctors whether people become healthier or not. Health insurance is a misnomer for disease management insurance. Health is not covered unless paid for out of a flex spending account or health savings account.
”Healthcare brokerage” - companies linking patients with professionals that fit their specific needs. Look at successful websites like patientslikeme.com (no affiliation). Tthe true meaning of “doctor” is “teacher” and to teach means “to show”. so those who “show how to maintain and promote health” will see lots of growth…and these people don’t necessarily need a “doctor” in front of their name.
Doctors who conduct classes instead of consultations. Who lead support groups and manage health teams of professionals will be the most successful.
Consultations will then stem out of these group relationships when specific health needs must be met with individualized care.
What do you think?
